Are you an experienced editor who can provide a solid copy edit of a 100-page technical report under a tight timeline? Would you describe yourself as unflappable in the face of high pressure and shifting deadlines? 

RTI International is looking for a highly experienced editor with a background in the sciences, public health, or social science to join our team of almost 30 editors and 80 multimedia staff. This senior-level position requires focused experience as a publications editor working with a style guide such as the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. This editor will work on deliverables including, but not limited to, technical reports, proposals, journal articles, presentations, literature reviews, Web copy, and brochures. Proven interpersonal collaboration and communications skills are required for this position.

While not required, a graduate degree, particularly in public health, social science, or the sciences, is a plus. Experience in plain language editing and writing is also an asset. 

The successful candidate will 
•    Edit documents according to the level of edit required (copy, substantive, rewrite) 
•    Work to resolve queries and consult on document organization 
•    Develop style guidelines as needed 
•    Coordinate, assign, and direct project-specific work of other production staff 
•    Apply skills to a broad range of editing/writing/document production tasks, including complex and unusual assignments 
•    Spearhead publications initiatives 
•    Provide guidance to and mentor less experienced editors 
•    Occasionally write or assemble new material from client-supplied information. 


Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of editing experience; or master’s degree and 6 years of editing experience; or a PhD and 3 years of editing experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Other requirements include 

•    Advanced knowledge of fundamental principles, terminology, and methodology of technical editing and document organization 
•    Advanced knowledge of grammar and punctuation rules
•    Broad knowledge of word processing, graphics, and printing processes and software for document production
•    Effective communication skills, required for providing diplomatic and constructive comments, providing project leadership on publications teams, and developing and maintaining strong client base 
•    Skill in observing detail 
•    Skill in abstracting or condensing general information for inclusion in documents 
•    Ability to manage complex long-term projects 
•    Sound judgment to analyze tasks and determine appropriate level of effort required for completion 
•    Ability to independently organize and prioritize own work and to adapt to changes in priorities, workload, and workflow 
•    Ability to successfully execute work on projects that are nonconforming and without precedence
•    Ability to understand and follow written guidelines, including departmental policies, RTI policies and procedures, and work orders 
•    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
